The small intestine is divided into three sections (duodenum, jejunum and ileum)
The pH of the small intestine is is maintained primarily by the bicarbonate ions secreted by the pancreas.
An important gastrointestinal hormone secretin is published by the possible presence of HCl in the duodenum (stomach).
Secretin stimulates the secretion of bicarbonate by the pancreas.
pH of about 6 is considered optimal.
